The Turban
Okay, we need to have a talk. It has come to my attention that this season's designer headgear of choice is the turban. Now, typically this word conjures up images of taxi drivers or screen sirens of the 1930's, but here we see a sleeker version from the fashion deity, Prada. But this trend is not just a blip from some crazy Italian, I have also espied the same questionable headdress in our homegrown boy, Ralph Lauren's, spring collection.
I can't tell you how this disturbs me. Not so much the turban itself, you can see how it might work on Norma Desmond, but the fact that they are being made available to the public- and in shiny purple- well that is downright terrifying! Come on now, you know most of society can't be trusted with their own fashion choices, and I fear the combination of an American Express card and a misguided sense of adventure could spell tragedy for a Manhattan socialite. It's a very short step from fashionista to penis head where a turban is concerned, and these in particular have a very prophylactic look about them.
And really, what is the appropriate occasion on which to wear such a thing? This chick looks like she's heading to the office for a day of board meetings or paper-filings. Can you honestly imagine such a look being well received at your local attorney's office?
Now Fashionslave holds a deep and abiding love for all things Prada, and at last check was somewhat on the fence regarding the turban revival. We await her comment in the Great Turban Debate of 2007.

ah, the gauntlet has been thrown. unfortunately Fashionslave is quite busy in the garment district today and thus does not have the time to properly formulate an opinion/answer regarding Spring's newest must have fashion accessory.
Okay, so i've made my decision.
I did a little digging and found that Georgio Armani actually showed the turban two seasons before Prada. But it never caught on then. Now that Prada showed it in all brightly colored satin (and apparently the things slide on and off like baseball caps), women all over the world are giving the turban a chance--is it that they really love the way they look when they see themselves in the mirror with a turban on? Is it the fact that you don't really have to wash or fix your hair when you're wearing a turban? (though i seriously doubt that the same people who are spending $500 on a Prada turban are those who are low maintenance dirty hair kind of chicks!) Or is it just that Prada could send a chicken costume down the runway and then sell out of it in the stores?
And like Q said, I do love all things Prada. I'm just not sure I'm ready for the turban. i don't even wear baseball hats because i think i look like a complete idiot. In fact, I don't wear anything on my head, but women all over the world have been covering their heads for as long as time. Scarves, headbands, etc. Those women on the other side of the pond where Q loves to visit so much spend a ton of money on huge hats I would consider a complete monstrosity if it weren't such a social thing. And hell, Britney's sporting some terrible wigs these days--are any of these better or worse than the turban?
So I'm going to say No to the turban this spring for me personally... but as a true lover of fashion tends to do, my opinion could change. I mean, I fought like hell when leggings and skinny jeans made a comeback, but then this winter my wardrobe consisted of quite a few pairs of both. Designers have to keep taking risks, keep pushing the envelope, keep looking everywhere for inspiration, and I, for one, am going to keep on giving turbans a little bit of a chance. :)
We thank Fashionslave for her most valuable insite and agree that some of the most memorable looks have had to grow on us.
For now though, we remind you to, unless you are Greta Garbo, leave the turban-wearing to the professionals
